Session Description: This workshop will reviews the current problem of adolescent addiction and best treatment practices for effectively engaging teenagers in treatment and recovery. This presentation will provide an overview of the neuroscience of adolescent addiction that has been adapted for easy understanding for both clinicians and providers alike as well as an overview of the current national and global state of addiction, current barriers to addiction treatment and successful outcomes, and the impact of COVID-19 on addiction and treatment. The workshop will discuss a variety of innovate approaches and modalities for counseling addictions, including accurate empathy, positive psychology, solution focused counseling, client-centered approaches, and cybernetics/systems theory.

After this activity participants should be able to
Demonstrate current findings/data that pose as barriers specific to adolescent populations. Review effect treatment interventions and access to care models that engage adolescents early in a Substance Use Disorder
Interactive lecture regarding the neuroscience of addiction and the additional challenges faced when dealing with adolescent brain development. Incorporate this information into effective treatment interventions, strategies, and clinical design models.
Review and analyze counseling approaches to treat addiction, including: positive psychology, solution focused, cybernetics/systems theory, client-centered, and accurate empathy for immediate application into clinical practice across settings.
