Outpatient Counselor and Art Therapist
St. Luke's Penn Foundation
Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
Charlene Michener, works as an outpatient drug and alcohol counselor utilizing art therapy in individual, family, and IOP group settings. She also began a new 3-hour long art therapy group once a week. During the sessions focus is on not only addictive behaviors but also the impacts of environments, families, and co-occurring mental health struggles. Art therapy in this setting is used with traditional recovery programming as an opportunity to learn through action and reflection. Charlene has extensive background in ceramic art but utilizes all mediums during her time in art therapy sessions. Charlene believes that through the creative process and use of metaphors individuals can learn about emotional regulation, relearn their self-identity without the addiction, and pave a road to better understand the road to recovery.
